Kofta Curry / Meatballs In A Spicy Sauce

This Kofta curry is very popular in most Indian homes. It is also extremely easy to make :)


Kofta Curry
Ingredients for the meatballs/koftas:
Half kg lean minced (ground) lamb
1 medium onion-chopped
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
Half tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp ground coriander seeds (dhaniya seeds)
2 tbsp fresh cilantro - finely chopped
1 small egg
Salt to taste

Ingredients for the sauce:
1/3 cup yogurt
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp red chilli powder
Half tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
1 tsp garam masala powder
1 cinnamon stick
2 cardamoms
1 clove
1 2/3 cups water
Salt to taste

Method:
Place the lamb in a large mixing bowl and the onions, ginger garlic paste, turmeric, red chilli, coriander powder, cilantro and salt. Whisk the egg and thoroughly mix it into the spiced lamb. Leave to stand for about an hour.
For the sauce, whisk together the yogurt, tomato paste, turmeric, red chilli powder, salt, ginger garlic paste and garam masala.
Heat the oil on medium heat with the cinnamon, cardamoms and cloves in a wok for about a minute, then pour in the prepared sauce. Lower the heat and cook for about 5 minutes.
Break off small balls of the meat mixture and make koftas using your hands. When all the koftas are ready, return the sauce to the heat and stir in the water. Drop in the koftas one by one. Place the remaining fresh cilantro on top, cover with a lid and cook for about 7-10 minutes, stirring gently several times to turn the koftas around.

Serve hot with naans and rice! Happy eating :)
